Compressed Air 101

Six short lessons for the counter and the field: what air costs, how CFM, PSI, and HP fit together, the path from compressor to tool, air quality, leaks, and sizing. Each one ends with a 5-question quiz that shows you why after every answer.

What Compressed Air Really Costs

Most customers think air is free. It comes out of a pipe on the wall, so nobody gets a bill for it. They do get a bill. It just shows up on the power bill, not the purchase order.

CFM vs PSI vs HP

A customer calls and says, "I need a 10 horse compressor." That is not enough to quote. Horsepower is the size of the motor. It does not tell you if the machine will run their tools. You need all three numbers, and you need to know what each one means.

The System Path, From Compressor to Tool

Every compressed air system follows the same path. Learn the order and you can troubleshoot most calls in your head. Think of it like a supply chain: each step hands off to the next, and a weak link anywhere shows up at the end.

Lesson 4 · 5-question quiz

Air Quality and ISO 8573-1

"Clean dry air" means different things to a tire shop and a pharmaceutical plant. ISO 8573-1 gives everyone the same language. Learn to read it and you can quote air treatment with confidence.

Lesson 5 · 5-question quiz

Leaks and Pressure Drop

These two problems cause more "we need a bigger compressor" calls than anything else. Most of the time the compressor is fine. The air is getting lost or choked on the way to the tool.

Sizing Basics

Size a compressor to the work, not to the motor the customer had before. This is the counter-level method. For a large or critical system, have the compressor maker or a system engineer check the numbers before you quote.

How the quizzes work

Pick an answer and you see right away if it is right, plus the reason. Nothing is saved and nothing is sent anywhere. Reload the page to start over.
